Laundromats

These are places of small-scale connection, photographed empty, when their purpose has ceased for the day. In Edward Hopper’s paintings, the night loneliness and isolation settle over them. They are beautiful examples of a certain era and type of architecture, yet they remain here not out of sentimentality or aesthetic appreciation, but out of cold economics, i.e., upgrading would not bring more profit. The people they serve are often those left behind in our society. Most don’t have the luxury of appreciating the design aesthetic of these ghosts.
